Safe on the Move

1. Self-protection begins long before the actual confrontation

When people think about self-protection, the wrong movie often plays in their minds. Many know the image from films or TV series: long fights, perfectly executed movements, time to react – and at the end, the “hero story”.

That may look spectacular, but it has almost nothing to do with reality on the street.

A real assault looks completely different

An attack is sudden, chaotic, unfair and in most cases decided within a few seconds. There is no prelude, no “I’m getting ready,” no second round.

The moment you realize you are being attacked is often the same moment you are being hit, shoved or grabbed.

Offenders do not fight – they overwhelm (quickly, brutally, emotionlessly)

An offender never seeks a fair fight. He seeks the easiest success. He chooses a victim who appears alone, distracted, inattentive or physically inferior.

He deliberately acts within an extremely unequal balance of power – in his favor. That is only logical; he wants to take no risk.

Freezing in shock is normal – not weakness

In real violence, no one reacts like they do in the movies. The body switches into stress mode: tunnel vision, racing pulse, mental block, trembling hands. That is not personal weakness, but biology.

Complicated movements do not work in that state. What counts are simple, direct actions – and any form of help that creates distance.

Self-protection begins long before the assault. The most important part is not a combative confrontation, but your behavior beforehand: noticing, avoiding, keeping distance, being prepared.

And if avoidance fails, you need something that helps immediately – even when body and mind are failing in the moment.

2. How offenders choose their victims – and how you can recognize danger early

An assault is rarely pure coincidence. In many cases, the offender has already been observing the environment for a while, has a victim profile – and specifically looks for people who appear to him to be “easy targets”.

If you understand how offenders think, you can recognize and avoid many dangerous situations before they escalate.

The offender is not looking for a fight – but easy prey

An offender makes his decision very soberly: he wants as little risk as possible, no attention, and maximum gain. That means:

  • He does not attack the strongest person, but the visibly weakest.
  • He chooses someone who is alone – without company, without witnesses.
  • He watches whether someone is distracted: phone, headphones, eyes down.
  • He prefers places where help takes a long time to arrive or where nobody is watching.

In his calculation, you are not an “opponent” but an easy target and tempting prey. The attack is an action he wants to get over with quickly. From his point of view, you are a disturbing factor that needs to be eliminated. It is exactly this thinking that needs to be broken.

Typical hotspots and risk locations

Many assaults do not happen in the middle of a busy shopping center, but in places where people already feel uneasy – and still have to pass through:

  • dark or poorly visible paths
  • underground parking lots and parking garages
  • underpasses and remote bus stops
  • elevators and narrow stairwells
  • ATMs and checkout areas late in the evening
  • isolated paths while walking the dog or jogging

That does not mean you must avoid all these places – but you should present yourself differently there than you would in a safe environment.

Prevention: how to make yourself less interesting to offenders

You cannot eliminate every danger. But you can make sure an offender does not see you as the first victim on his list.

Important factors are:

  • Upright posture: head up, shoulders straight, looking around rather than at the ground.
  • Awareness: no constant typing on your smartphone, no loud headphones, but conscious observation.
  • Clear movement: walk briskly and decisively, not hesitantly.
  • Eye contact: short, deliberate glances around – not aggressive, but enough to appear “awake”.
An offender always chooses the person from whom he expects the quickest, easiest success. Anyone who appears alert, aware and decisive falls much lower on that inner list.
Questions you should ask yourself before a situation

Just a few reflections can significantly improve your safety. For example, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Where am I parking – is the path to the car clearly visible or very secluded?
  • When am I walking there – in broad daylight or late at night alone?
  • Do I have one hand free in case something unexpected happens?
  • Do I appear alert right now – or am I buried in my phone?
  • What would be my next step if someone confronted me right now?

These questions are not meant to create fear – they create clarity. Anyone who consciously plans their path has already fulfilled a large part of self-defense before anything even happens. Important: Every assault that does not take place is a major win for you.

3. When the body can no longer keep up – self-protection for older and “ordinary” people

Many people unconsciously think about self-protection in terms of their “former” body: younger, stronger, more agile. And they overestimate their abilities. In reality, things often look poor – especially at an older age.

Joints start making themselves felt, reaction time and strength decrease, balance becomes more fragile. For criminals, that is exactly what makes someone attractive: they deliberately look for people with a clear physical disadvantage.

What changes with age

As people get older, certain factors change that are decisive in a physical confrontation:

  • Reduced physical performance: forceful, fast or physically demanding defensive actions become harder to perform reliably with age.
  • Reduced mobility: quick changes of direction or complex turns hardly work anymore.
  • Delayed reaction: by the time the brain signals “danger!”, something has often already happened.
  • More fragile balance: a push or kick can quickly lead to a fall – with a high risk of injury.
  • Vision and hearing: some things are noticed later or not at all.

All of this is completely normal – but it must be honestly taken into account in any realistic consideration of safety on the move.

Anyone who overestimates their physical abilities or relies on techniques that can only be performed with a lot of strength and mobility takes a high risk. In a real emergency, the goal is not “victory,” but surviving the situation.

Why the idea of a “fair fight” is misleading

In real assault situations, there is often a clear imbalance: the attacker deliberately chooses the timing and situation, and exploits surprise, proximity or distraction. This puts the targeted person at a considerable disadvantage – especially if they are unprepared.

The idea of a regulated or “fair” process therefore does not match reality. Stress, pressure and physical limitations immediately affect reaction capability and certainty of action.

Especially with increasing age or physical inferiority, the risk rises that direct physical resistance will lead to serious injuries. The more strength, dynamics or physical effort are required, the greater the danger of making the situation uncontrollable.

For that reason, realistic self-protection concepts focus not on confrontation, but on avoidance, distance, orientation and timely retreat.

What are realistic goals for ordinary and older people?

Realistic self-protection does not mean “defeating” the attacker. Realistic and sensible goals are things like:

  • Recognizing the threat early and avoiding it if possible.
  • Creating distance before the offender gains physical control.
  • Protecting key areas: head, neck, torso.
  • Avoiding falls in order to prevent broken bones and serious injuries.
  • Enabling escape – getting away, calling for help.

To achieve these goals, you need strategies and tools that still work when strength, mobility and reaction are no longer at the level of youth.

Why a Sicherheitsschirm or another suitable object changes the rules

This is exactly where a strong companion comes into play: it compensates for physical disadvantages and creates reach, stability and options for action that you often do not have with bare hands.

As this page continues, we will take a closer look at what such a protective tool should look like – and why the Sicherheitsschirm is designed to meet these requirements in so many ways.

4. Why a suitable tool changes the rules of the game

If an offender is younger, stronger and faster, an ordinary or older person often has only one option: change the rules of the situation. This is exactly where a strong companion comes into play.

A good tool does not need to perform miracles – it should ensure that the attacker no longer has all the advantages on his side.

What a companion should be able to do in an emergency

For a Sicherheitsschirm to really help in a stress situation, it must meet some basic requirements:

  • Create reach: the offender should not be able to get directly to your body.
  • Easy to use: no complicated safeties, buttons or procedures.
  • Stress-capable: usable even with trembling hands and a racing pulse.
  • Robust and reliable: it must not break or fail in an emergency.
  • Legally unproblematic: legal to carry in everyday life, not a prohibited object.
  • Discreet in everyday life: it does not attract negative attention, but deters in an emergency.
  • Always available: it is not left at home in the closet when you need it outside.
An object that only works in theory helps little. What matters is whether it is quickly at hand in real, chaotic situations and can be used without much thought. Buying pepper spray and hoping you can use it effectively in an emergency is more than negligent.

Why many theoretical solutions fail in practice

People often talk about what they “would do in an emergency”: they imagine throws, strikes or exotic techniques. But in practice, many things fail for very simple reasons:

  • The stick is at home.
  • Other equipment requires fine motor skills that are not available under stress.
  • It has never been practiced.
  • It feels uncomfortable to carry it visibly.
  • Or it is simply legally problematic.
The ideal scenario: everyday object and protective tool in one

Ideally, you want an object that fulfills two roles at once:

  • In everyday life it is a useful, completely normal companion that nobody questions.
  • In an emergency it becomes a stable, well-controlled tool that creates distance and can block attacks.

This is exactly the idea behind the Sicherheitsschirm: a regular, high-quality umbrella that in an emergency can do more than just keep off the rain.

Important: a tool does not replace awareness or good judgment. But it can turn a hopelessly unequal situation into one in which you have a real chance to protect yourself and get away.

5. The Sicherheitsschirm – what it concretely changes in a dangerous situation

For orientation: what the following video shows – and what it does not
The video illustrates typical danger situations from everyday life and explains why distance, presence and thoughtful behavior are decisive in defusing critical situations as early as possible.

This presentation serves awareness and understanding. It is not a call to violence, not an instruction in self-defense, and it does not replace training or legal advice. The goal is to recognize risks better and avoid conflicts whenever possible.

In tense situations, what often matters is not strength, but clarity, distance, and the ability to free yourself from a situation in a controlled way. The Sicherheitsschirm can help you gain time and expand your options for action – discreet in everyday life, supportive in an emergency.

Create distance instead of getting into danger

With bare hands, you have to let the attacker come very close – exactly where he is strongest and most dangerous. The Sicherheitsschirm changes that distance:

  • You keep the attacker at a distance with the stable shaft.
  • You can block and press without immediately allowing yourself to be grabbed.
  • You protect sensitive areas such as the head, neck and upper body without being pulled into a dangerous close fight.

How the Sicherheitsschirm protects you in an emergency

This scene shows the ideal defensive posture; easy for anyone to learn. No special prerequisites are required. Behind every small movement is a clear technique – and that is exactly what we explain to you step by step in the video course.

Umbrella is almost impossible to snatch away

Compact grip position and close body use make it difficult for the attacker to grab or tear away the umbrella. This allows you to remain in control of your tool.

You learn these and other techniques in the video course – easy to follow, even with no prior knowledge.

Stable body position

The foot and hip position ensures a secure stance. That allows you to transfer force without losing balance – even on slippery ground.

Keep the attacker at a distance

The Sicherheitsschirm creates distance between you and the attacker. This makes it harder for him to grab or hit you while you remain capable of acting.

Targeted force

The way the umbrella is guided allows targeted, controlled movements – enough to stop an attack without escalating unnecessarily.

Everything about the Sicherheitsschirm

Stability and control with less strength

The Sicherheitsschirm was designed to withstand loads for which a normal umbrella was never intended. That means:

  • You work with the umbrella’s length, not just with your muscle strength.
  • Movements are simple and gross-motor – feasible even with stress, adrenaline and a racing pulse.
  • The umbrella offers a clear guiding handhold you can orient yourself by – even if you are nervous.
The goal is not to “defeat” the attacker, but to disrupt his attempt to grab you, create distance, and gain a chance to escape. The Sicherheitsschirm gives you a decisive lever in your hand.

Suitable for everyday life, legal, and always with you

A protective tool only helps if you actually carry it with you in everyday life. That is exactly why the Sicherheitsschirm is designed as an everyday object:

  • It is legal – an umbrella is unproblematic to carry in Germany and many other countries.
  • It does not attract negative attention in everyday life – neither on the street, nor in the office, nor while travelling.
  • It accompanies you where you need it: on the way to work, on a walk, going out.
  • The included umbrella sleeve makes it easy to carry.

Particularly interesting for older and “ordinary” people

Especially people who are not (or no longer) at peak physical performance benefit from the Sicherheitsschirm because it:

  • does not require athletic ability,
  • works with a few clear movements, and
  • compensates for physical disadvantages instead of making them worse.

The Sicherheitsschirm can also be integrated relatively easily into training and simple practice routines – for example in combination with a basic course or your video training.

From “completely at the mercy of the situation” to “I have a real option”

No one can completely eliminate danger. But it makes a huge difference whether you face a threat completely unprepared and with bare hands – or with a stable, discreet tool specifically developed for such situations.

In the next step, we will show how the Sicherheitsschirm can be integrated concretely into everyday life – and how to choose the model that best fits your height, your daily life and your safety needs.

6. The unfairly planned balance suddenly shifts.

Offenders only attack when they believe they clearly have the upper hand. A single object changes that calculation.

What happens when a Sicherheitsschirm is in play

  • Reach +40–60 cm – you are no longer directly within grabbing range.
  • Blocking instead of striking – you do not have to be a fighter, you simply keep the attacker at a distance.
  • Distance instead of grappling on the ground – the umbrella prevents the offender from getting too close to you.
  • Unbreakable carbon shaft – the tool remains stable no matter how strong the attacker is.
  • Always with you – in the rain, an umbrella is completely discreet and immediately ready for use. Beyond that, it is always a welcome companion as a walking aid.

The psychological effect on the offender

An offender sees within seconds whether someone is defenseless – or not. With a Sicherheitsschirm:

  • he has to come closer and risks pain,
  • he loses his surprise and control,
  • he no longer sees an “easy victim”.

His tactic of overpowering you is replaced by a rude awakening. In reality, that often means exactly what you want: his plan fails and the offender backs off.

The Sicherheitsschirm turns

“I cannot defend myself”

into

“I have a realistic chance of getting away unharmed.”

Not through blind violence, but through reach, barrier and escape opportunity.

7. Self-protection begins in the mind.

In critical situations, not only strength and technique matter, but above all your inner attitude and your willingness to act.

Mental principles that anyone can master

  • Do not freeze – recognize early that something is wrong.
  • Know your options for action – small steps instead of panic paralysis.
  • Make a clear decision – defend yourself when it becomes necessary.
  • Focus on what matters – create distance and escape.
  • No unnecessary escalation – your goal is safety, not heroism.

Physical movement – simple, clear and doable

No one has to master perfect techniques. Often, a few natural movements are enough:

  • Forward block – protects the head and upper body.
  • Create distance – creates space around your body.
  • Side steps – break the angle of attack.

These movements work for people of any age – especially with a Sicherheitsschirm as an extended arm.

Why a stick or umbrella changes everything

  • Increases your reach – you keep attackers at a distance right away.
  • Amplifies your natural strength – without training or muscle power.
  • Creates respect & hesitation – many offenders look for easier targets.
  • Gives confidence to act – you do not have to react with bare hands.

→ With the Sicherheitsschirm, you use these advantages – legally, discreetly, and suitable for everyday life.

Reality instead of myths

  • You do not have to be a professional.
  • An umbrella replaces years of training – through reach alone.
  • Defense means enabling escape, not fighting to the end.
  • Mental preparation counts twice as much as physical strength.

Self-protection does not mean living in fear – it means being prepared.

With the right tool, a clear mind and the strategy “distance instead of fistfight,” you can increase your safety enormously.

8. Do something for your safety today – not tomorrow

Maybe you will never experience a dangerous situation. But if you do, it is too late to start thinking about solutions then.

What you have seen on this page

  • Violence rarely happens by chance – offenders choose seemingly easy victims.
  • Pure physical strength is often not enough, especially at an older age.
  • Tools can significantly change the balance of power in your favor.
  • The Sicherheitsschirm is legal, discreet, and always “justifiably” with you in everyday life.
  • Self-protection means creating distance and enabling escape – not fighting at any price.

Our experience from seminars, training sessions and customer feedback shows:
People who are prepared act more clearly – and more often come through dangerous situations unharmed.

If you have read this far, then your safety matters to you.
The next step is simple – and it is up to you.

You do not have to change your life – just make one decision:
Never be completely unprepared again when you are out and about.
